Fate defied
The fish is inspired by a beautiful poem by Adelaide Crapsey:
Fate defied
As it
Were tissue of silver
I’ll wear, O fate, thy grey,
And go mistily radiant, clad
Like the moon.
Adelaide lived over a hundred years ago with poor health, which makes this poem so inspiring. She is defiant and challenges fate despite her circumstances. Expressing herself despite the limitations she would have been experiencing as a woman.
I wanted to capture this emotion through expressive movement and the shaping of the composition. The internal structure and external texture are made entirely with paper and card. With thousands of hand cut paper pieces. It took approximately 50 hours to make and will be on display with Blink Group gallery in Miami later this year.
